Annual continuing education
Stay Certified. Stay Prepared. Stay Ready.
Maintain your certification and reinforce the skills that matter with Annual Continuing Education from Big Iron Handgun License Training.
Our continuing education program is designed for qualified first responders who have completed their initial handgun training and need to fulfill their annual certification renewal requirements.
Keep Your Certification Current
Ongoing Training for Continued Readiness
Training doesn't end after initial certification. Maintaining your qualifications is an important part of staying prepared for the responsibilities that come with carrying a handgun while on duty.
Under Texas Government Code §411.1883, Armed First Responder certificates of completion expire one year after issuance. Annual continuing education is required to maintain certification.
Big Iron Handgun License Training helps eligible first responders continue their training, reinforce responsible firearm handling, and work toward meeting applicable Texas Department of Public Safety renewal requirements.
Why Annual Continuing Education Matters
Continuing education is about more than meeting a requirement. It's an opportunity to maintain proficiency, strengthen confidence, and reinforce the knowledge needed to make responsible decisions.
Complete the required continuing education and documentation to support your annual certification renewal.
Refresh your understanding of firearm safety, responsible handgun handling, and principles covered during your initial training.
Review relevant legal responsibilities, safety considerations, and applicable training standards.
Maintain the knowledge and proficiency expected of qualified first responders working in demanding environments.

Plan Ahead for Your Annual Renewal
Don't Wait Until Your Certification Expires
Texas Armed First Responder certificates expire on the first anniversary of issuance.
Under applicable DPS rules, continuing education training documentation is valid for six months from issuance and must remain valid on the expiration date of the existing certificate.
We encourage participants and department training coordinators to review their certification dates early and allow enough time to complete training and submit the necessary renewal documentation.
